What Serany thinks about this poem

Meaning

Fathers and sons never quite get it right, he says, because a bit too much shade ends up blocking the light, and a dad says I love you in riddles like buying a bike. Then it turns into instructions for doing it better, which come down to holding the boy, telling him things are only things, and asking whether he got home safe.

Who's it for

A father and son who got it almost right. Right for a service where a man is going to have to stand up and talk about his dad.

If—

This poem is for someone who got on with things, kept their temper, and didn’t make a fuss when life went against them. The sort of person other people steadied themselves against.

The Village Blacksmith

This poem is for a working man who provided, turned up, and never made anything of it. Someone whose children still remember the sound of him getting on with the day.
