What Serany thinks about this poem

Meaning

A list of the things men do instead of saying them. They do not say sorry, they stop doing the thing; they do not say I love you, they hold you together when you come apart. It says a man is only alone twice, once when he is lost and once when he hides.

Who's it for

A father or grandfather who never said much and showed all of it in what he did. Right for a family who know exactly what he meant and never heard him say it.

If—

This poem is for someone who got on with things, kept their temper, and didn’t make a fuss when life went against them. The sort of person other people steadied themselves against.
