What Serany thinks about this poem

Meaning

A long argument that love is the thing itself and not the background music: a woman singing to herself at the top of the stairs, an eighty-two-year-old man ringing his wife from hospital to say he is fine, my love, twice in eleven seconds. It ends asking what else anybody thought they were doing all this time.

Who's it for

A marriage that lasted, read by the one who is left. Right for a family who want the funeral to be about the love rather than the illness.

If—

This poem is for someone who got on with things, kept their temper, and didn’t make a fuss when life went against them. The sort of person other people steadied themselves against.
