Robert Richardson · 1893
What Serany thinks about this poem
Background
Richardson published it in Australia in 1893. Mark Twain used an adapted version on his daughter's gravestone, and when people started crediting him with it he had Richardson's name cut into the stone underneath.
Meaning
It asks the sun, the wind and the grass to be gentle with someone who has been buried. Then it says goodnight to her, twice, the way you would to someone going to sleep.
Who's it for
Someone who died young, and a family who want something very short and very tender. Right where a longer reading would be more than anyone could manage.
