What Serany thinks about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Who they are

Longfellow was the most widely read poet in America in his own lifetime, and Victorian children on both sides of the Atlantic learned him by heart. His second wife Frances died in 1861 when her dress caught fire, and he grew the beard he is always pictured in to cover the burns from trying to save her.

Why we'd read them at a funeral

He wrote to be said out loud, which is why he still works at a lectern. Reach for him when a family want something that sounds like it has been said before, because it has.

The Village Blacksmith

This poem is for a working man who provided, turned up, and never made anything of it. Someone whose children still remember the sound of him getting on with the day.

Are you planning a funeral?

A Serany website keeps the whole funeral in one place: the plans and the details, who is coming, flowers and donations, and somewhere for everyone who knew them to leave a memory.
